Thank you, Richard, for your reflection, which I will share with the YCW group at UNDA (University of Notre Dame Australia). Their actions are about bringing people together, about accompaniment, about transformation.
Cardijn played a key role in the final editing of Gaudium et Spes, Lumen Gentium, and Mater et Magistra, and was the "ghost writer" for Pacem et Terris for Pope John XXIII. All of the theologians of Vatican II were teaching at a university in France when Roncalli was the nuncio, and they all came together at the council. The See-Judge-Act method was central to the council and the documents. We see Francis often citing the method. It came to the US, and organizations such as the Christian Family Movement, Young Christian Students, and Young Christian Workers were formed.
"Religion would be the opium of the people, Marx would be right if the Church said to the working masses, “You will be happy after death.” No— “Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”~Joseph Cardinal Cardijn
The work at hand is bringing the Kingdom of Heaven here and now.
The theologians of Vatican II aimed to move the church back to a movement that resembled what the early followers observed in the teachings of Jesus, as opposed to a patriarchal, hierarchical, and imperial organization. That resembled the worst of the Middle Ages.
