William, I am not sure where you live. I live in Australia and I taught in Catholic schools for about fifty years, most of that time in low fee-paying schools. I was blessed to be able to travel to the US in 2013 to present at an international conference, and while there I visited schools at both ends of the scale, from the rich and privileged to a school for “students of modest economic means.” I would have happily stayed in the latter school because the sense of mission was so much stronger there. Personally, I think being in that sort of environment is reward enough.
The risk we now face is scandal. The Catholic schools here in the USA are now so expensive that we are not giving priority to the poor. We must find a way to practice what we preach.
“For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour.” (Matthew 16:21-27)
If we continue to allow the Catholic schools to become so expensive that they serve primarily the upper classes while the poor are left in the public schools, do you think that this “behaviour” deserves much of a “reward”?
